In Cold Tears Richard and Jill move to James Mill, a small town near Springfield, MO.  Jill enrolls at Missouri State University as a graduate student, and Richard works a variety of semi-skilled jobs while dealing with depression.  He becomes involved with a mother who is the main suspect in the disappearance of her own infant daughter.  He becomes obsessed with his amateur investigation as he tries to find the missing child.  Jill, understanding that what he is doing is saving him from his depression, encourages him.  At the end of the story, she sacrifices a doctoral student position and takes a job teaching at Blue Creek Community College after talking her husband into taking a job with the Hawthorn County sheriff's department.
